Extending your DS-2019
Students in J-1 status are permitted to stay in the U.S. until the program end date listed in box 3 of their DS-2019 form [or the completion of their academic program at JHU, if ending early] plus a 30-day grace period following completion of the academic program. During the grace period, a student may remain in the U.S. but cannot continue activities at JHU.
Students must pursue a full course of study and make normal progress in their program during the dates on their DS-2019 form in box 3 to maintain J-1 status. Students who need additional time to complete their program [beyond the end date on their DS-2019 form] must apply for an extension prior to the end date of their current DS-2019.
