J-1 Scholar Eligibility Requirements

Individuals coming to Johns Hopkins to engage in scholarly research, teaching or other academic activities may be eligible for sponsorship in the J-1 Exchange Visitor immigration status.

OIS provides immigration sponsorship for individuals who have received a formal invitation from a specific hosting department at Johns Hopkins University. OIS works with the hosting department to determine eligibility for the J-1 Exchange Visitor immigration status based on the appointment title, proposed activities, and other criteria as outlined.

  • Must hold a full-time academic appointment (part-time positions not permitted)
  • Position must be temporary (i.e. non-tenure-track)
  • Non-academic staff positions and positions involving Clinical Training are not eligible for J-1 sponsorship by Johns Hopkins. (Foreign medical graduates participating in medical internships, residencies, specialized clinical training, and other positions involving more than incidental patient contact may only be sponsored by ECFMG)

Individuals whose appointments are deemed eligible for one of the J-1 categories available for scholars should review additional J-1 requirements:

Individuals who would like their legally married spouse and dependent children under age 21 to accompany them may be able to request J-2 status for them at the time of submitting initial J-1 request. It is possible to request J-2 status after you have received your J-1 DS-2019 form. Contact OIS at J1-Advising@jhu.edu to request information.

*Individuals who are transferring an existing J-1 status should be aware of the time limitations of their J-1 category and review the information outlined on the Transfer-In section of our website.

J-1 Request Process Timeline

To begin the process for J-1 immigration sponsorship, the Johns Hopkins hosting department will reach out to the prospective J-1 Exchange Visitor (EV) to grant access to the required J-1 request eForms in iHopkins (the database used by OIS for reviewing immigration-related requests). The timeline below provides an overview of the process. A more detailed description of the J-1 Request Process Timeline is also available.

If you have questions about J-1 Exchange Visitor status, please contact the OIS at J1-Advising@jhu.edu.
