OIS offers numerous webinars and workshops throughout the year to help inform students, scholars, and employees on a variety of topics. These sessions are offered virtually and may require registration to attend.

Academic Training for J-1 Students

International students in J-1 status are eligible to request off-campus employment and training authorization through a provision called “Academic Training”. Workshop participants will be educated on what Academic Training is, how it can be used by students in J-1 status, and what steps are involved in requesting Academic Training authorization at Johns Hopkins University.  To register and to submit questions, click on the date below:

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for F-1 Students

International students use CPT as a mechanism to gain authorization for off-campus internships, practicums, and training opportunities while studying in their academic programs at JHU. Participants of this workshop will learn about the eligibility requirements for CPT, deadlines to apply for CPT, and necessary steps for CPT approval. To register and to submit questions, click on the date below:

J-1 Exchange Visitor Travel Workshop

Participants of this workshop will understand the requirements for inbound return travel into the U.S. including documents needed, international travel considerations, the visa renewal process, and how to request travel authorization from the OIS. Optional Practical Training (OPT) Workshop for F-1 Students

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a 12-month work authorization allowing international students to remain in the United States and work immediately after program completion.  Participants of this workshop will understand the eligibility requirements for OPT, deadlines to apply for OPT, necessary steps for OPT application, and reporting requirements for students once they are in their post-completion OPT period.  OIS recommends all eligible students apply for OPT as early as possible due to expected USCIS processing times. New Student Roadmap: Navigating your First Semester

Join the Office of International Services (OIS) for the first workshop in our two-part New Student Roadmap Series for new international students! Our first session, Navigating Your First Semester, will cover key information on how to maintain your F or J status, on-campus employment rules, and tips for living in the US including healthcare basics, safety, tipping culture, and more! New Student Roadmap: Thriving in U.S. Culture

Join the Office of International Services (OIS) for the second workshop in our two-part New Student Roadmap Series: Thriving in US Culture. This workshop will cover key information on how to successfully transition to life in the U.S. including US classroom culture, culture shock and adjustment, making friends and getting connected on campus, immigration status basics, and more! Pre-Arrival Workshops for New International Students

OIS offers multiple workshops for our incoming F-1 and J-1 international students throughout the Spring and Summer. We encourage all new students to attend one immigration focused workshop, in addition to the Housing and Getting Connected workshops listed below. Students should also review the New Student section of our website to familiarize themselves with the immigration and pre-arrival steps.

Immigration

This workshop is offered to new, incoming international students as well as SEVIS transfer students coming to Johns Hopkins University. Participants will learn how to schedule and prepare for an F or J visa appointment, and if applicable – how to transfer an existing SEVIS record from a previous school to JHU and prepare for entry to the United States. At the end of this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of international services advisors from the Office of International Services. Note: The workshop offered on June 3, 2026 will include additional information for students completing a SEVIS Transfer to JHU.  To register and to submit questions, click on the dates below:

Housing

This workshop is offered to new, incoming international students at Johns Hopkins University.  Participants will hear directly from representatives of JHU Housing Offices for guidance on securing housing in the United States.   At the end of this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions. Getting Connected

This workshop is intended to provide new, incoming international students with valuable resources to help transition to life at Johns Hopkins University.  Participants will hear directly from current students at JHU regarding how to join relevant student organizations, which campus offices to utilize, and other ways international students can get connected with their new campus. STEM OPT Extension: Application

The STEM OPT Extension is a 24-month extension of the standard, post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) work authorization for international students in F-1 status. Participants of this workshop will understand the eligibility requirements for a STEM OPT Extension, employment requirements, necessary steps for a STEM OPT Extension application, and tips for filing a STEM OPT Extension application.   To register and to submit questions, click on the dates below:

STEM OPT Extension: Reporting

Students on the STEM OPT Extension have several reporting requirements throughout the 24-month period, more than are required during the post-completion OPT period. Participants of this workshop will understand all STEM OPT Extension reporting requirements. Specifically, we will address 6-month validity reports, 12-month and Final Evaluations on the Form I-983, and how to report material changes to the Office of International Services at Johns Hopkins University while on a STEM Extension. U.S. Immigration and Employment Options

This workshop explores various immigration and employment options like U.S. Permanent Residency and transitioning from F-1 and J-1 status to H-1B status.
