All individuals whose visa status is sponsored by JHU are required to check-in with the Office of International Services upon arrival to the respective campus. In most cases, the check-in process will be completed online.  Please read the information below for specific instructions based on visa status.

 

F-1 Student Check-In (Online)

Newly admitted students will be contacted by email regarding the check-in process.  Your first step in the process will be reviewing the on-line SEVIS presentation which will give you basic information about your immigration rights and responsibilities.  You will need to also be prepared to upload copies of certain immigration documents, details of which are located in the SEVIS Check-in Document Upload Instructions.   Please note that you cannot be verified for on campus employment until the check in is completed and approved.
 

J-1 Student Check-In (Online)

Incoming students in J-1 status will be contacted by email regarding the check-in process.  If your J-1 status is sponsored by JHU, your first step will be reviewing the on-line Orientation presentation which will give you basic information about your immigration rights and responsibilities.  You will need to also be prepared to upload copies of certain immigration documents, details of which are located in the SEVIS Check-in Document Upload Instructions.   Please note that you cannot be authorized for on campus employment until the check in is completed and approved.

 

J-1 Scholar Check-In (Online)

Individuals sponsored for J-1 status in the research scholar, short-term scholar or professor category will receive check-in instructions by email.  If you do not receive those instructions or have questions about them, please contact j1-scholars@jhmi.edu.  

 

 

Check-In for individuals in all other visa statuses (in person)

The following documents are required for check-in:

  • OIS Check-In Form (please make sure to complete the correct form).

JHU-sponsored Check-In Form: This form should be completed by individuals in an H-1B, J-1 Alien Physician, TN, E-3, O-1 or F-1* status that is sponsored by Johns Hopkins.  "Sponsored by" means that JHU provided the individual with a form I-20, DS-2019 or filed a petition with USCIS on behalf of that individual. 

Non-sponsored Check-In Form: This form should be completed by individuals in all other visa statuses or in the above visa status but NOT sponsored by JHU.  "Non-sponsored" means that JHU did not provide the individual with a form I-20 or DS-2019 or file a petition with USCIS on behalf of that individual.

  • Your Passport
     
  • Your U.S. visa stamp (if applicable)
     
  • Your I-94 Document.  To retrieve your I-94 information, please visit the Customs and Border Protection website.  Enter the required information and print your I-94 document.  Bring this document with you to check in.  If you experience difficulty, please inform OIS staff when checking in and we will help you retrieve the document.
     
  • Documents demonstrating your immigration status (for example:  I-20, DS-2019, I-797 Approval Notice, EAD Card, Green Card)

*Only F-1 students sponsored by JHU who are working at JHU on OPT should complete this form.  All other F-1 students will follow the Student Check-In process described above.

 

Change of Status

Individuals who have undergone a change of status to a new immigration status (i.e. F-1 to J-1, J-1 to H-1B, etc.) are required to come in and complete the check-in process again upon receiving confirmation of the approval of the change of status application or re-entry to the U.S. in the new status.

I-9 Information

For individuals being paid by the School of Medicine, the OIS will also complete your I-9 Employment Eligibility Form at your check-in.  This process requires that you present specific documentation to verify your employment eligibility.  Please see the list of acceptable documentation for completing the I-9 process.
