The information on this page is for individuals who have been admitted to Summer Programs or Winter Institutes within The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Summer Programs include JHSPH Summer Institutes, Global Tobacco Leadership Program and the Leadership in Strategic Health Communication Workshop.
Due to variations in the programs and in the situations of individuals attending, it is necessary for the Office of International Services to determine the appropriate visa type for particpants on an individual basis.
So that we may advise you regarding the appropriate visa type, please complete the Institute Applicant Form and email it to email@example.com. In reply, you and the coordinator of the program you plan to attend will receive an email indicating the appropriate visa status. If necessary, the program coordinator will begin the process of requesting J-1 sponsorship for you.
Information for participants requiring J-1 sponsorship
If J-1 sponsorship is necessary, you will need to provide the program coordinator with the following documents:
- copy of your unexpired passport ID page
- copy of your funding documents
- documentation to fulfill the English Proficiency Requirement (if you do not have documentation to fulfill Options 1 or 3, your program Coordinator will contact you regarding an interview)
You will receive an email with instructions on how to access a web portal called iHopkins. The email will ask you to fill out two E-forms: the J-1 Applicant Information E-Form and the Health Insurance Pledge. You will need to upload a copy of your passport biographical page with the request. Your program coordinator will work with the OIS to ensure that you receive your DS-2019. If you have not received an email with instructions to access the iHopkins, please contact your institute coordinator.
Shipment of DS-2019
Upon completion of the Health Insurance Pledge E-form, you will be directed to the website of eShip Global where you will set up and pay for the shipment of your DS-2019.
While in J-1 status, you must maintain health insurance. Make sure to review the health insurance requirements prior to purchasing a health insurance plan. While the OIS cannot endorse any specific plan we do encourage you to consider those plans endorsed by NAFSA as Global Partners.
Check In with the OIS
Upon arrival, you are required to check in with the OIS. Check in is completed electronically and does not require you to come to the OIS. You will receive check in instructions via email from the OIS thirty days before your DS-2019 start date. As soon as you enter the U.S., you can complete the check in process.
