All internationals are required to check-in with the Office of International Services upon arrival to the respective campus. This includes individuals for whom Hopkins is not your immigration sponsor (i.e. rotators, individuals on OPT from other institutions, etc.).

Check-In Process (non-student) at JHMI 

The following documents are required for check-in:

  • OIS Check-In Form (please make sure to complete the correct form.

JHU-sponsored Check-In Form: This form should be completed by individuals in an F-1* J-1, H-1B or O-1 status that is sponsored by Johns Hopkins.  "Sponsored by" means that JHU provided the individual with a form I-20, DS-2019 or filed a petition with USCIS on behalf of that individual. 

Non-sponsored Check-In Form: This form should be completed by individuals in all other visa statuses or in the above visa status but NOT sponsored by JHU.  "Non-sponsored" means that JHU did not provide the individual with a form I-20 or DS-2019 or file a petition with USCIS on behalf of that individual.

  • Your Passport
     
  • Your U.S. visa stamp (if applicable)
     
  • Your I-94 Document.  To retrieve your I-94 information, please visit the Customs and Border Protection website.  Enter the required information and print your I-94 document.  Bring this document with you to check in.  If you experience difficulty, please inform OIS staff when checking in and we will help you retrieve the document.
     
  • Documents demonstrating your immigration status (for example:  I-20, DS-2019, I-797 Approval Notice, EAD Card, Green Card)

*Only F-1 students sponsored by JHU who are working at JHU on OPT should complete this form.  All other F-1 students will follow the Student Check-In Process below.

Individuals sponsored for J-1 status will receive check-in instructions by email.  If you do not receive those instructions or have questions about them, please contact ois@jhu.edu.  

 

Student Check-In Process

Newly admitted students will be contacted by the OIS regarding the check-in process.  Check-in processes may vary by school.

Students who are asked to upload copies of their immigration documents can refer to the SEVIS Check-In Document Upload Instructions for more information.

Change of Status

Individuals who have undergone a change of status to a new immigration status (i.e. F-1 to J-1, J-1 to H-1B, etc.) are required to come in and complete the check-in process again upon receiving confirmation of the approval of the change of status application or re-entry to the U.S. in the new status.

I-9 Information

For individuals being paid by the School of Medicine, the OIS will also complete your I-9 Employment Eligibility Form at your check-in.  This process requires that you present specific documentation to verify your employment eligibility.  Please see the list of acceptable documentation for completing the I-9 process.
